Seanchai Corner - Introduction

The Seanchai (SHAN' a-ky) is a remnant of the old Celtic Bardic system. A Seanchai is a story-teller whose tales were intended to entertain the community during the long dark nights of winter in the days before electric lights, radio, television and movies. But the Seanchai is also responsible to perpetuate the wisdom of our Celtic ancestors by oral repeating of information diligently memorized, and passed on from one generation to another.

I lay no claim to the astounding feats of memory of th… Continue

HAHAHA ... SO YOU FOUND THAT ONE....my dad told me that as our side of the family came through Ireland on the way to America a male ancestor stopped long enough to find and marry an Irish O'More lady..... sooo that is the decent on my dads side......mom was a Britt...Decended from a Hugh Britt, who as the history only said "came from Ireland", with no futher info....so we have no info on that side (other than a Cherokee Indian blood infusion)....any way Grand father Jeff Moore said that Moore/More genes were Dominant in us....as you said I'm A Moore Or Muir ........Slan Agat ta ye Bear.

Greetings to you, McBear! You have absolutely hit the nail on the head. I've spent my whole life, starting with teachers in school, correcting the spelling of our name. Once had a fight with an English teacher and the principal, both of whom wanted to respell my name, until my mother threatened a court battle. My father was a first generation Scots American. My grandfather was born in Ayrshire, and moved his family to America in 1898. They settled in Washington state, in the Seattle area, and that is where my father was born, in 1900. He passed in 1965. I was born in Nevada, in 1940, and after a turbulent life, am now back in Nevada, retired.

Dan,
Yes, registering your own coat of arms would allow you to have a tattoo of it. I don't know the exact amount of the fees, but this is something you can find out at the Lord Lyon Court of Arms, where your arms will be registered. I have heard that the cost is about $3,000? Find someone who practices heraldry - there are a surprising number of them around - I know a Moore member of our clan who does it. They will help you design a coat of arms. The Lyon Court will have to approve the design, so it can't be too similar to the Muirs of Rowallan or another registered Muir coat of arms. But the hearldry person you work with will understand that.

When you contact the Lyon Court to find out the fees, let me know how much it costs - I'm interested in doing it myself.

Regards,

MacBear

Alright I think that registering a coat of arms is what I need to do then. How do I go about doing something like that? I'm not very artistic and what are the fees associated? it wouldn't need to be too fancy but I would like a pretty neat one. I really like the Glasgow arms that's neat. But the Muir of ohio is neat aswell. What if I took a the muir of Rowallans arms and modified it by adding the MD flag where the bails of wheat are, and changed the colors would that be a big enough change to have it registered as my own?

I love tattoos if I wanted to get my coat of arms what would be proper to get?? I really enjoy speaking with everyone in the clan!! Just want to let you guy's know. I wish I would have known more long ago. It took me getting my first Kilt for halloween many years back to get me to where I am now. I really want a new tattoo, to reflect the Clan Muir I may actually get it while in Scotland. Which of the symbols would best represent the Clan? I really like the Coat of Arms..........
