When Patrick and his sons arrived, and had their children baptised, William was listed as "A stranger from Ireland". Other notes have said they were born in Ulster. Mary, Patricks daughter married John Justice in the church in newell church in Scituate MA abt 1724/27, She stayed near them for quite awhile and I think she died in Halifax Co VA.
Patrick's son Robert was a constable and so was Hugh who died 1760 leaving a will in Halifax Co. VA but the last page had been torn away. There was a struggle when Hugh's minor son John wanted to claim his inheritence, and His mother Martha (Wall) remarried first Bates, then Lawson. The court record show Nathaniel Greene siding with Young John's rights. Looks like Lawson was trying to take over everything. Greene defended John.
I understand that a Constable, is a Baron of Land, and in Scotland is only hereditary title. I dont know if that is so, but seems logical. The title Gentleman follows Hugh, Robert, and John, but not found in my Joseph, and Alexander or William who became a minister called a dissenter.
In court records of Halifax Co VA, a man named Kirby or Irby spelt his name with a loop and inside it wrote 1746. This clues me into maybe a Culloden event, but I dont know, Kirby ended up with a large plantation and slaves. He may have been a Constable also I dont know for sure. In 1771 on Miry creek lived a John Hancock, and a Thomas Payne alongside the John Moore Gent. who stayed on in Halifax VA while his brothers migrated 1763/67 to SC and NC.
I have some copies of the Halifax Court records. I also followed names we were associated with. Boyd bought our lands after 1767, and some Boyds are found still amoung us in SC, and NC and GA where we ended up, before our 1870 move to Colorado.
The powerful association is the placename Halifax.

Thank you for representing Clan Muir at the Gathering 2009

To those who bravely stepped up to the call to honor the Clans, I thank you for being there and going through all that you endured to be the beacon for the Muirs. It would not be easy for anyone to have been the first in abt 250 years of being bannished, to step back into the circle we once very strongly belonged and participated in wholeheartedly. I hope we can grow closer togather, and heal those ancient wounds.
God Bless!

Burning questions

I have about a bizillion questions in my head, and I have no place to ask them, (that I am aware of). Firstly, how many zeros are in a bizillion? Secondly, did I spell that correctly? lol. Ok, seriously... Some of my questions are way out there, but something tells me there might be a clue or a new avenue to inspect to gather truth for myself. So, I put my brave heart on my sleeve, and although I am sometimes shaking in my braveheart boots, I am going out of my comfort zone, and I am just going… Continue

Karen,
Thanks for the note. When are you planning to visit Ireland and Scotland? What you wear at home will be obviously the norm in the normal course of events. If you're going to a special do, then it will depend on the occasion. You may get along to a ceilidh in Scotland!
Is that a border collie in the picture?

Regards,
Victor

Wild Geese

I wish to state my case och aye
On these wild geese as they go by
They make a vee as off they fly
Sae rude in Drumnadrochit

Whit's more is all the honks they sound
As they have lift off frae the ground
That Noise man should be out a bounds
Right here in Drumnadrochit

And they're from Ireland, more's the pity
Probably frae Dublin City
The racket that they make's nae pretty
Here in Drumnadrochit

Och man frae landing if they're banned
There would be peace throughout the land
But broadswords tae the sky we'll stand
And fight in Drumnadrochit

Even Nessie,she's aye sae quiet
She doesna even tourists bite
Wild geese keep her awake all night
In lovely Drumnadrochit

I ken goose quilts are very good
And the Goose Downie warms yer blood
I'll help ye get goose down on your bed
Richt here frae Drumnadrochit

These wild geese fairly get my goat
Wi honks that issue frae their throats
I'd send them aw tae John of Groats
Nae mare in Drumnadrochit

They are all Irish, aye,tak note
no doot frae Dublin on the boat
I wud mak sure they widna float
Tae honk in Drumnadrochit

But Karen Moore Mackenzie noo
She's an entirely different brew
For I wud order tea for two
Right here in Drumndrochit.

Hello Karen, I will be pleased to help you where I can. It is not a well known fact but when I was at school many years ago teachers were not allowed to teach Scottish history, only English history. In fact there was a time when the English banned us from wearing kilts, and when the Scottish islanders had to vist the mainland they would change into trousers at certain places on the mainland and these places were called Tightruaish (I think that is the correct spelling, but it means "house of the trousers"). Thank you for your interest.
Yours, Chief Andrew
