The Clann That Will Not Die

I am disabled and I am unable to work. As a result, I cannot afford to purchase a kilted skirt in the Muir tartan. My question is: What tartan(s) do other members of the Clan wear who cannot afford the proper kilt or skirt? I want all members of my family to wear the same tartan. Someone suggested Royal Stewart. Hunting Stewart, or Black Stewart. Which tartan is the best? I do not want to wear Black Watch because the Campbell Muirs wear it as their official tartan. Also, can anyone tell me if our Clan has a hunting tartan or a dress tartan? Has Chief Andrew Moore made a list of accepted tartans?

Cindy, here is a link that will help you out, http://www.clannmuir.com/tartan.html

I am a daily kilt wearer, and if you can't afford the Muir Tartans, any of the universal tartans is what I would recommend. The Spirit of Alba is very nice, also there are many other Universal, and Scottish tartans to choose from. In Modern day it dosen't matter which tartan you wear. I own a Hamilton, and wear it from time to time, it's one I really like.

Hi Cindy I would suggest the Gordon tartan as the Muir name is regarded here as a sept of the Gordons. But of course you may well be able to buy a Muir Tartan skirt on the internet on ebay or at least get a length of tartan at prices much cheaper than regular shops sell at.Aye Yours David
Ps certainly not Campbell,I come from Argyll and I used to poach the duke of Argylls rivers when I wa aboy on principle because I thought they deserved it.Thankfully my father found out and I got compulsorily re-educated.!!! it stung.!!

My Scottish ancestor was from Renfewshire. He came to the USA in the 1840s. As far as I know and what my family tells me, he was a lowlander who did not have any clan affiliation and he did not wear the kilt or any tartan. I do not have any family history of Clan membership, We are Muirs, by being a blood descendent of a man who came from Renfewshire whose last name was Moore. However, I would like to wear tartan. According to some books and internet sources I have read that I should wear Campbell tartan or Muir tartan because my family has lowland origins. Can I wear the Gordon tartan, if my ancestor came from Renfewshire? I am very ignorant about clan traditions and protocol. Thank you for your help.
