Dear Robert,
Apologies for the delay in responding to your query about the artefacts excavated at Rowallan Old Castle (the end of the financial year is a busy time of year for us, and I have had to meet a number of deadlines).

I am very pleased that you enjoyed your tour of the Castle. You are correct in saying that some of the archaeological evidence from the North-East tower was of Iron Age date (around 300-100 BC), although the excavated earthenware urn was rather older, dating from the Bronze Age (around 2000 BC).

As Doreen mentioned, the results of our archaeological work over recent years (including a very thorough archaeological survey of the buildings, as well as the findings from the excavation) have been brought together in a publication which is currently in press. We are hopeful that this will be published within the next couple of weeks, and I will then be able to send you the full title and let you know where to consult and/or obtain a copy.

I hope this is helpful.
With best wishes,
Adrian

I came across this article this morning, and I am curious as to what brought forward the title continuence of "Lord Rowallan", after the said Last known Laird of the Mure/Muir Clan had died without a male heir. I would like to see these coats of arms found that are referenced in this article. Can anyone explain how the castle was lost from the Muir clan and passed to a different clan?, especially when there were plenty of Mure/Muir blood laterally in exhistence at the time it was lost?( i.e .Mure of Caldwell ).

I would love to unravel the true story here if that will ever be possible.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Karen

I just noticed Wiki had updated the Rowallan Castle article again, on October 26,2009;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowallan_Castle
It is good we can look back at all the cached articles and compare at the bottom links, I hope we can get to the bottom of the line of evidence there must be in exhistence. :)

I wrote a note to get the name of the publication of the Archaeology of Rowallan Castle, and here was the response;
Dear Karen,

I am responding to an e-mail you sent to my colleague Lesley Brown asking about the details of a new publication on the archaeology of Rowallan Castle. This is one of the new titles in our archaeology publications series, and covers the results of several years of archaeological and documentary research. The title is: ‘A Palace Fit For a Laird’ (Historic Scotland Archaeology Report No 1). It is available to purchase from our on-line shop (contact hs.shop@scotland.gsi.gov.uk) or by telephoning +44 (0)131 657 8440.

I hope this is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need further details.

With best wishes,

Adrian Cox

Hi all,
I just recieved my copy of the Historic Scotland Archaeology Report #1, 'A Palace fit for a Laird'. I anticipated it's arrival for quite some time. It took 12 days in shipping to America and cost $15.00 . The first thing that happened when I looked at it, was a stream of tears came down my face. To have more details of this family than has ever been available before, was overwhelmingly emotional for me, for I know a thing about this Clan, and what happened to them, and now I am finding out by whom the harm was done. I have not yet read every word on every page, I spent time mostly on page 75, and a map on page 94 that is of interest to me for some unknown reason. I shall pour over it, and form an opinion of the content, and extract from it, all the clues it does leave me for further investigation. The whole story of this family is more than just a Knights tale. It holds much honour, and is deserving of much attention. I am quite humbled.
